The Family

Founded in 1979 by ANDRÉ ROMÉRO, designated The superstar of RASTEAU by Robert Parker, DOMAINE LA SOUMADE has grown to include André’s son FRÉDÉRIC and a newly-modernized winery in 2002. The winery itself is one of the family’s secret weapons, as André himself created, designed and engineered the winery and cellar to reflect his own vision of the specific wines he produces.

The Vineyard

The Domaine covers 64 acres in RASTEAU plus 3 acres in GIGONDAS, on clay & limestone soils, with vines of 30 to 50 years of age.

Grapes are harvested by hand and the best grapes are selected on a sorting table in the vineyard. Agriculture raisonée (promoting the development of sustainable farming)is practiced in all the vineyards to maximize the characteristics of the terroirs. Organic compost is used and only applied when soil deficiencies are revealed. Soil and vine vegetation analyses are performed on a regular basis to monitor the ecological health of the vineyards and surrounding areas.

The Winemaking Philosophy

The approach, according to André ROMERO:

“My approach is to extract the greatest possible expression from the unique single-vineyard terroirs we own. As such, in my self-designed cellar I have designated specific ‘foudres’ (large vats made of French oak) for specific single vineyards, for specific varietals and even for grapes coming from vineyards of specific ages, all vinified separately to ensure their unique characters.”
